Psychiatric Doors

At the Chester Hospital, Robertshaw has been examing the doors of the isolation rooms, regarding them as an archive of the histrory of individuals. He stripped away the old plywood veneers to reveal the orginal surfaces. Under the plywood, the doors were dented, cracked and deformed, evidence of the patient's violent distress. This action also recovered the origianl spy-holes in the doors, as well as the marks of screws, which, formerly would have secured a padded surface to the inside of the door. Using a very small video monitor and viewfinder, through macro photography, Robertshaw tracked the marks on the doors as geography of illness and of enforced constraint.
